29th January 2009 - Wheat Bulb Fly Egg-Hatch Sprays
|
Egg hatch is now underway in Cambridgeshire and parts of Yorkshire. Egg numbers are lower than in recent years, but crops look rather different to the last few seasons. We have been in a sequence of warm autumns and winters, which have resulted in crops with high numbers of tillers, even at this time of year. A low infestation of wheat bulb fly may have reduced the number of tillers, but most plants will have survived. In many areas this is not the case this season. Most, particularly late drilled crops are small, and any infestation of wheat bulb fly will result in plant loss [View PDF] |

23rd January 2009 - Herbicide Options For Cereals In Scotland
|
The 2008 – 9 season is proving to be difficult in terms of early weed control. Many pre-emergence treatments have been missed, and the temptation may be to leave crops until the late spring. Although we have had significant amounts of cold weather this season as compared to the last several years, crops do have a range of emerged weeds that will grow rapidly as soon as the weather warms up. Some species, especially annual meadow grass will prove difficult or even impossible to control if left too late, and allowed to grow too large. [View PDF] |

2nd October 2007 - NITRATE SALTS SHOW INCREASED PLANT UPTAKE
|
Trials work carried out in the late 1990’s showed that nitrates are taken into the plant far more readily than other salts thereby rapidly rectifying any deficiency and enhancing rain-fastness. Work was carried out at by independent organisations such as Harper Adams and SAC.
A further 8 trials were conducted in 2004 – 2005 in Lincolnshire and Northumberland on Winter Wheat and Winter Oilseed Rape. Different micronutrient formulations were applied and tissue tests were taken at 3, 7 and 14 days after application. The trials were taken to yield. |

10th October 2005 - OSR MICRONUTRIENT TRIALS REVEAL KEY TO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED YIELDS
|
"Give it plenty in autumn and then again in spring to significantly increase OSR yields, economically.
That’s the advice from Headland’s Technical Manager, Charlie Bannister following the results of trials carried out by Headland at sites in North Lincs and North Yorkshire between 2004/5 which have proved conclusively that the economical way to significantly increased OSR crop yields - equivalent to an extra £92 with OSR at £130 per tonne - is to apply plenty of micronutrients in autumn and again in spring, not just in spring alone.
